Writing CV And Cover Letters |
|
Your resume or CV
is not only about you. Its half about the people and the organization
to whom its being sent. Besides, you should write your CV in such
a way as to attract attention so that you may be picked out of
several or hundreds of CVs. CV is your first point of contact
with the potential employer. While we are not advocating outrageous
colouring of CV, it should contain enough information about you
so that the employer can make an imaginary picture of you. Ideally
CV should be coincise, precise and appropriate for the organisation
in mind. Thus a single CV does not fit for all employers and organisations.
Some CV experts suggests that resume should not be more than 2
pages.
While you provide information about yourself, you should equally write your CV to
reflect the qualities of the personnel required by the potential
employer. Therefore, it is important to do a thorough research
about the intended organisation. Make equiries about the JOB/ORGANISATION
from the current or past employees. Show some interest in
the organisation. However, the information you provided in your
CV should be honest as any dishonest information may prove disastrous
when and if you are offered the JOB.
Though debatable, it is reasonable good to write a cover letter
with your CV. This reveals a lot about you such as:
The cover letter reveals:
- How well you can communicate
- What your experience, skills and qualifications are --briefly
- Your level of professionalism and how you may go about it
- Clues to your kind of person
- How detail oriented you are (ie, are there typos or other
errors?)
GUIDES TO WRITTING COVER LETTERS
- Let your letter be focused as much as possible to the target
and industry.
- Talk more about what your skills are for the prospective employer
than about what you can get out of them.
- Focused on your career goals.
- Be positive about your life and your employment situation.
- Be concise and precise.
- Be honest. Make claims that is prove-able with examples.
- Stick to one page if possible.
- Ensure the letter is error free.
- Obtain a second opinion before dispatching it.
- Keep records so that you can easily follow them up.
